Well I finally did it! I had just put my bike motor in the back of the bronco. I forgot to throw in the two 2' x4' pieces of plywood. Just set them on top leaning forward towards the backseat so I thought they would be ok. Well about 15 seconds later, smash. It was like zero out so that didnt help. A little cold driving here in Buffalo, but I have plywood covering it now. Anyone know where they have decent prices for the window. Cheapest I found was 249 free shipping. How hard are they to install?? Thanks guys!
You may try a u-pull yard if you have one locale. They are not that bad to put in I did mine a couple years ago when I found a clean tailgate. Now is also a good time to replace the inner and outer seals on it. I got mine from lmc truck and they were pertty cheap.
That's a fabulous price for the back glass. Is that with our without the defrost grid? Installation requires opening the access panel on the inside and removing the four rivets (or bolts if the glass has been replaced before) that hold it to the slide tracks on the regulator arms. With the rivets (and glass but in your case not so much) gone, you can install the new window down through the weatherstripping in the top of the gate and attache the glass back to the slide tracks with four 1/4-20 bolts with nylon stop nuts. The bolts don't need to be more than about 3/4"-1" long as I recall. That is really all there is to it. Take care when sliding the glass past the weatherstripping so as not to tear the stripping. Also be very careful if the glass has the defroster grid. The terminals for the electrical connections are soldered to the bottom corners of the grid and they will catch on the weatherstripping.
Hmmm, that seems interesting Towman, have you heard from that guy again? how did the window work out for him since 2003?.
There was a lot of talk on that thread about the defroster grid. I see that jegs carries an anti-fog treatment from the same company that - if it works of course - make the defroster not necessary. Also, I don't know about anyone else but in the Bronco I use the side mirrors a lot more than the back window.
Don't be scared to 'call around' to your local glass shops. My rear window broke on my '95 this past summer, and I think I paid $165 installed (with defrost). Its not as bad as you might think!~ Good Luck~!
Anti-fog treatments are useless against snow, ice and spray that all build up on the back glass in the dead-air vortex while driving these trucks. The ONLY thing that will keep that kind of stuff from building up is a working defrost grid. Sorry guys... many years in midwest winters with and without the grid working tell this tale with no other viable options for success.
I don't need a defrost grid (nor any Broncos had them as options here) as my weather is way warmer down here, so it's still a viable option in my country.
