EGR, how to know?

How can you know if your egr valve is working properly?
I ran a vacuum line inside so I could see the gauge while driving. No vac at idle of course and 5-13 in. depending on load/throttle. Best mileage so far 11.6
351W, HO, 99k. All original and stock.
Thanks to all.

Something wrong there, you should have full vacuum at idle. And if you apply full manifold vacuum to the EGR valve at idle it should open and make the engine stumble.

Thanks for the reply.
I think you told me what I needed to know.
The vacuum readings were from a T in the egr hose itself.

Oh.. well in that case you inadvertently confirmed that the EGR controller is functioning as it should. Now you just need to determine if the valve is opening or not using the test above. If the engine doesn't stumble when manifold vacuum is applied directly to the valve and you visually confirm the valve moved(you can see the plunger through the holes in the body), then that suggests the EGR passage is blocked with carbon.

The intake was leaking badly when I bought it, took care of all the carbon when I re-sealed it.
