Who's stirred up just have to give ford a hard time. The stock pumps have always been good to me, And I can only remember having to change return lines one time on my rigs besides when I was changing the Ip or injectors. And that was a kit I bought at napa, I will go with ford or international from now on unless I just change the orings.
Air intrusion is not what I call common with good parts and done right the return lines should out last the IP. These trucks were on the road a long time before we knew the return lines could be a problem.
Speaking of the mechanical pump, I kinda wonder why they didn't put a pump like this one in these with a fuel priming lever like my John Deere 3020. I played around with the idea of modifying one that had this, but I'm not gonna mess with the stock one if its doing its job just fine.
Here is a pic:
(Sorry for all the pics I'm loading up on various threads tonight, finally got a chance and went a little crazy with questions and things I've had for a while LOL)
A can of IH red or Ford blue spray paint would fix that LOL...but have to admit doing filters and things on these trucks would be simpler with a priming lever of sorts on the pump.
Yes it would be easier, but also gives you another point for air intrusion. That and the fact these were made for the general public is the only reason not to have one.
The older Dodges with the Cummins had the prime lever on the lift pump. It's a great idea.
That is what I was thinking. Any idea if there is a pump out there that would fit these that had a lever like that? I doubt it myself but you never know.

I don't know but these engines were used in so many applications (ex: marine, industrial, ect.) that I'm sure an extra polite, helpful, willing, persistent, energetic, nothin better to do INTERNATIONAL Parts counter representative may find an application that used it and will be willing to sell it to you. If you find it post the part #, I'd buy one when mine goes bad.
lol good luck with that. There are some still some good partsmen around, but finding one any more that can find the part in the computer after you give him the part number and application can be hard at times.

I can almost hear you laugh. Come on STAR lets be optimistic, he might find the right parts chaser.
I'm actually contemplating installing another mechanical pump in my truck only this one will not be driven by the engine, and would serve just as a prime pump for the system (by me manually moving the lever normally actuated by the camshaft). Anyone know if I can push fuel through a factory mechanical pump if its diaphragm remains stationary? I'm thinking of adding my second pump just before the fuel filter, which would mean the one down on the side of the engine will have to pump fuel through the new one...
