Ok I can get a set of BFG rugged trail range E with 200 miles on them factory mounted off an excursion. Basicly brand new rims and tires. I know the rims are worth it, but
are the tires safe to use? they have been stored in a garage since 05.
I bought my 01 in 03 and still have the tires that were on it. The tires were swapped off of the new truck as the prior owner wanted his wheels and tire. I'm about due for a new set due to treadwear.
You might also check the build date code on the tires, but you are probably alright for a year or two with those tires. I don't know if just sitting changes the reliability of the tires or not. I'd probably jump on em if the price was right.
Read the number behind molded DOT on the tires.
First couple of digits means week and the other pair the year of production.
Most of manufacturers advise disposing the tires after 7 years regardless the thread.
I've been using 10 years old car tires just fine, but I am religious about parking my cars in the shade.
As long as they were stored inside out of sunlight, like you stated, I wouldn't be too concerned. Give them a good look over for any cracks or signs of distress. Also, if they would allow you, take one of the tires to a reputable tire shop for another opinion based on inspection. Good Luck!
