Hello.
I have an 88 F-250 that has developed over time a good deal of play in the steering shaft, I can move the steering wheel about 6 inches side to side with out moving the front wheels at all.
I am wondering where then is the ware in the shaft, are there bushings inside of the upper shaft that can be replaced? or does the whole shaft need to be replaced?
Thanks!
Have you tried shaking/wiggling the steering linkage? Check tie rod ends and pitman arm connecting link- if the problem is in the linkage you should be able to find it.
Thanks for the reply.
The wear is deffinately in the shaft, it where the lower part of the shaft slides into the upper, what I am wondering is if this is repairable or if the whole shaft needs to be replaced?
Before looking into replacing the shaft, verify that all the nuts on the tie rod ends are correctly torqued and that the cotter pins that hold them in place aren't missing. If for some reason a cotter pin was lost or fell out and the nut worked loose, that could cause the play.
You should have two joints on that steering shaft. One is the rag joint at the bottom which can be replaced and then the slip joint at the top. If the play is in the slip joint then, as far as I am aware, you need to replace the whole shaft. Check out ebay.com for good prices.
Hopefully someone else will give an opinion soon.
