i have a 94 stroker with a 5speed ZF tranny. and now it upshifts fine, but if you try to down shift in motion it just whines (the tranny does) and will not go into any lower gear untill you come to a stop. so im lookin for tips on how to fix it, a tranny shop wants 3 grand, or where i could find another tranny.. no local junk yards have any. any help or tips would be great
true. Mine had gear oil in it when I got it!
It could be all kinds of problems on yours and is hard to diagnose like this but even new they can be a bear to downshift sometimes.
It sounds like the synchros are gone at least and possibly the shift forks too if you can upshift ok. complete rebuild kits with new forks and synchros are less than a grand for these and are super easy to do, IF, you have the right tools. BIG pullers, oxy acetylene heating torch and an electric bearing heater for going back together.
Another common cause for this is worn out throw out bearing, pilot bearing and the shaft that the throwout rides on being grooved.
It is supposed to have synthetic mercon ATF in it. I use synthetic mobil 1 ATF in mine.
On your upshifts try shifting around 2000 RPMfor 1-2 and 2-3 then 2300 for 3-4 and 4-5 and note the speed at each shift. The gears should fall right in even without the clutch at this RPM or close to it. Once you got it down where the gears fall in then try downshifting at a little bit lower speed and rpm. Just 100-200 rpm lower. Hopefully it is just some getting used to.
its not the fluid, i changed that when i put in the sb clutch. def not how im shifting, ive had it for 3 years. synchrons are prolly the problem im thinking now. where can i get a rebuild kit? i def dont want to throw another 2 grand for a tranny into it right now. my right foot, along with the injectors, turbo, tuner ect is my own worst enemy i think...
my tranny guy will rebuild mine for me for $1200.. i also know of a place in Minnesota that can ship you a tranny for like $1400. not sure where to get a rebuild kit though.
