4x4 Issue/Question

As my username indicates, I am new to the Superduty world, but no stranger to Ford (I have owned >10 Fords...3 at this time). I tried searching for an answer to the question I am about to ask...but did not manage to find it. My truck runs great with no sound at all from the drivetrain. However, when I lock in the manual hubs I get a dull grinding sound that gets worse when I engage the 4x4. If I only engage the passenger's side, it is quiet...so I have determined that the issue seems to be with the driver's side. I am not sure if it is the hub/bearing or the manual locking mechanism. Has anyone had this issue before...what did you find to be the problem? Any help is appreciated!!

It could be the bearing in the u joint. When you engage the hub it would put torque and force on the joint. If the bearings are worn or sliding out of place it would put uneven pressure on the carrier and may cause a grinding noise. I would imagine that if it was a wheel bearing it would grind all the time.
