What is a ball park for a new windshield. My 88 F150 will need a new one soon! It has a crack from above the steering wheel to about half way across and maybe a quarter of the way up. I don't know if more guys DIY or hire someone to do it. Is this something that you could take off of an salvaged truck? Thanks in advance for the help.
I paid $279 for my last one. I am a mechanic, and would not do my owne windshield, EVER again. you have to cut the old one out[ can you say glass splinters?], then cut back the old glue surface [can you say ripped nuckels?], put in the new adheasive, then "set" the glass in place. if you do all this right, the glass won't crack, and the chrome will fit back on, if not, it won't. then after he rain comes, it leaks like there's no glass in there. best part, you save $50 by doing it yourself. ask me how I know this.
Shop around. when i was calling around for prices and found that the places near me where high (270) then i went about 20 miles south and got a deal(195) they did a good job too no leaks just shop around and read reviews.
Windshield price depends on your location. In Ohio, a new one for my 1990 F-150 was $260 about 2 years ago. A new one for my 1989 F-250 in Utah this past October was $125, and they installed it in my driveway!
My insurance won't cover it. I'm in Ely, practically an island to civilization. And all the shops in town really like to rip off college kids. Maybe I'll check in Virginia (town not the state)
I know a junk yard near Grand Rapids that replaces them fairly reasonable. Can't give you an exact price, but I asked them before and they were the cheapest around.
Got mine done last march on my 95, paid right at 120 for a professionally installed new one. They even got it sealed around a crushed and repaired cab roof.
Chucks Auto Salvage, 218-328-6281. There's one in Duluth too, Chesney's I think. It's north of the airport, rice lake road. Chucks should have it though.
