06 FX4 F150 5.4 that will not turn over. Last week I noticed the truck intermittently showing signs of not wanting to start. It would act like power would be cut from the starter as it was turning over or it would just not start or it would start fine. Well last night it decided not to start at all, and still would not start this morning. When the key goes to the on position I can hear the fuel pump prime the system and when I go to the start position I hear the relays click in the fuse box on the passenger side. The battery shows 12.37 volts in the key on position and 12.1 volts when I try to engage the starter. I have tried to jump start it with now result. I have also tried to rule out the key programming and both have the same result, no start. I tried switching the relays around in the fuse box, nothing. I tried starting it in neutral and nothing. No corrosion on the battery terminals and they are tight. I have also tried going to the key on for five seconds and then starting it and that did not help. I am going to check the connections on the starter after work tonight. I am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
From your description it sounds like a solenoid. There are places that can run tests on the charging and starting systems for you. You will need to be able to get it to them though.
Update: I hit the starter two times with a hammer and the starter turned over. The truck starts up now, but the starter does not like to crank over. I load tested the battery and borrowed the battery from my brother truck to verify that the starter was bad. Good thing I got the extended warranty. Truck goes into the dealer for a new starter tomorrow. I already verified that it is covered.
