05 6.0 125,000 been super lucky up till now. Never had not one problem with this motor, its been super dependable.
But the last few weeks on real cold days 15 degrees or so the motor barely starts ,when it does finally gets going after sputtering and running real rough with blue smoke,& black smoke. it clears up and runs good but not like it used to before all this crap.
I have been using amsoil 15-40 since new, but after this started to happen i tried rotella 5w-40 to assist with the cold condition.Also I never got a cord for the block heater, because did not have the need for it till now.
last night i had the block heater hooked up and made a difference , but not 100 %. The truck has AIRAID a/cleaner, sct tune, (put ot back to the stock setting for now) 4'' straight pipe w/ dual tail pipe splitter. Egr delete w/ plug only.
ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS, DON'T HAVE ANY GOOD DEPENDABLE FORD DIESEL TECHS IN MY AREA IN PHILADELPHIA
@redford
The motor starts much easier when plugged in,and it doesn't spue out any blue smoke,maybe a little hazing . nothing like when its not pluggged in with the severe sputtering, shaking and choking. The truck does have 125,000 on it always started and ran like a raped ape, it never had cold start problems like this

If you want to try a better oil than the AMSOIL 15w40 try the "AMSOIL HDD 5W30 DIESEL." It costs more than the 15w40 but the difference it make is amazing. I tried both and the HDD gave me about a 3 to 4 mpg gain and it starts easier in the winter also. We had a 05 F 550 at work and it did about the same thing yours is doing. We changed the fuel injectors, turbo, and all the filters and it never did run right again. Never have got it to run like it should and it still won't hardly crank even in the summer.
mxpro I don't know if this will help, but a few years ago I changed distributors of diesel fuel on my farm tractors would barely start and if they did they sputter for 2 to 5 minutes before the even out possibly the way they're cutting the fuel in your area this was the case in my situation, it also had a heavy water content needless to say I went back to my original distributor and never had a problem again. some of the older tractors always have a problem in the cold but none of the newer ones with high pressure rail injection just a week ago started up in three below not windchill standing air temperature didn't even have to plug them in I run full synthetic 0w-40 oil. Fuel sometimes the most overlooked culprit in a diesel engine causing numerous problems, and even some gas stations that always have great fuel sometimes get a bad load it happens something to think about take care
