Not sure where or how to direct this yet but here is kind of what I'm thinkin.
I have a VERY long time project (Mustang) that isn't moving forward at all and thinking maybe that i need to get some outside help.
What kind of shop should i maybe look for.
One that charges by the hour ?
Hard to estimate what the bill will be and are these going to cost more ?
Shops that flat rate ?
Easier to predict a total but do you get the same quality of work done, maybe some shops will rush thru it to make money ?
Deep pockets are a must cause a proper resto isn`t be cheap.
Off hand I`d look for someone that does resto work on his own rather than just an everyday body shop.
I agree with Morris. If your not going to do the work yourself, be prepared to spend some cash!
Alot of variables mentioned when it comes to cost, like what Warren was asking.
IF I was going to get someone else to work on a project for me, I would probably try to find a guy that does it on the side, or is retired. The cost will be a little less, and alot of thsoe retired guys still really enjoy doing work like that, and do a good job.
Two higher end places that come to mind are Radical Restorations in Cadogen,AB (Bob) and Creative Concepts in Warman (Byron).
I know a guy who did his Hemi Charger and Bob's then took his Hemi Cuda to Byron.
Well this car will never be for sale, it is my first and i have owned it since 1988, several have inquired. It is in too many pieces to sell and get anything out of it so i think i am committed.....or should be COMMITTED
An hourly shop is the way to go after talking with others, plenty of stories gone bad with a flat rate place and under the table can have problems too.
The car started off as a gold plated, billion dollar idea ( i was young and stupid okay) but now i am looking to have a nice clean safe realiable driver. The idea of a $20,000 paint job has long since been changed to a good driver quality shine.
Communication with the hired guy is critical, what can he do , what do i want. What do i want needs to be very clearly stated. I think me and the guy doing the work need to "click", "be of the same mind set". I wouldn't travel too far from S'toon or P.A. I know there are good shops elsewhere but the travel adds costs and i think the owner should be able to be present sometimes for consultations.
Here is a pic.....not ford truck related but Ford true blue.
paying a shop to do it you can prolly expect about 35,000$ for a turnkey nice driver, nothing showy but clean and straight with nice paint. price goes up from there of course depending on what you want. restos are more expensive than mods
Yikes Chris don't tell my wife that she may change her mind. That would be high end, I am looking for someone to finish body and do paint, with me finishing mechanicals, trim and interior and it would a mod more than a resto.
If anyone knows of a shop or guy I might be interested in P.M. me, I have a couple names but always use more.
id recommend Creative Concepts (he did my buddies bodywork on his 32 ford) or Tom Firths shop (not sure what its called) but its also in Warman
in that case Neil Ramsey would be a good guy to look into but hes got something of a years waiting list. Ill dig up his number for you. He did the fab on my peaked headlight doors
