Those 12 valve cummins are awesome, all mechanical engines. My friend has one that he tweaked the fuel pump and he can get 25-28 miles to the gallon reliably, the only other thing he has is big straight piped exhaust and a cold air intake.
The best mileage I have ever been able to get was 23.9 MPG driving from Rock Springs to Cheyenne WY. I was running empty with a tail wind. The worst I have ever had was right at 16 MPG. I had a loaded bed and loaded Uhaul trailer on the same strech of road heading west into the wind. Everyone says Wyoming sucks, but it is somewhere east of here, because I had a head wind from Cedar Rapids Iowa all the way back. Normal running around, mostly empty I get around 20 MPG.
I'd love an MPG like that!!
I love the sound my 'ol 400 makes too much though!!
Diesel is around .60c a litre cheaper than petrol here in NZ, but they hike the registration on diesels by $200.00 there abouts, and you have to buy road miles, around $267.00 for 5000km, add in the increased servicing and you gotta do around 35000km a year to make it worth owning a diesel down here!!
But I gotta love what you guys are doing.
Shane
Around here diesel used to be more expensive than gas (petrol), but recently (last year or so) it's a couple cents less than the cheapest grade of gas.
The fact that my stupid 360 in the crew cab got maybe 8 mpg (I have a heavy foot) and the fact that diesel fule is cheaper played a part in my decision to swap. Hearing a diesel sound coming out from the old dentside hood and being able to say there was a cummins under there were larger deciding factors
