Another GPR Issue

So for the last 3 weeks I have been having a problem with my truck not wanting to start very easily. You know, cycle the relay a few times, plug it in overnight, white smoke on startup. Unfortunately for me today is the first day I have had to check it out. I have already ordered a Stancor GPR and it will be here Tuesday.
I followed the instuctions on the RHN and everything checks out okay EXCEPT I get NO voltage going out to the glow plugs. Temp was 30 degrees at 1pm today and truck started okay after being plugged in for 3 hours. I can hear the GPR clicking when my wife turns the key on but get absolutely zip for voltage. Will our trucks still start with a little effort with no glow plug assistance at all at this temp? Apparently it looks like they will. Just to be sure I ran the test 3-4 times with all the same results. Hopefully the new Stancor relay will fix this. Now if I could just figure out what's wrong with my 81 Corvette. At least it will fit in the garage!

I will post what happens after I install the new GPR.. Hopefully by the end of next week. Tom

Stancor is the way to go. Sounds like you on the right path.

If you need the truck while you wait for the stancor. You can drop a 3/8 short extension across the to large terminals of the GPR. To warm up the glow plugs manually for a minute. I had to while i waited for snail mail to bring me my stancor..

At 30* with being plugged in, I would suspect a fairly normal startup. As mentioned, just run a jumper wire from the #2 to #4 studs (the 2 large studs) for 20 seconds or so. You should have battery voltage on the #4 stud going to the GPs while you do this. It'll fire right up after that.

Once you get the Stancor in, I would definitely recommend doing the GPR LED mod so you'll know exactly when the GPs are on. It'll let you know once your GPR starts failing so you can avoid excessive wear on your starting and charging systems.

Yes, it should start at 30* being plugged in. It would start (but not too well) without being plugged in esp if you are running syn.

Like they said, make some sparks if you have to get it started. It wouldn't be bad practice even if it is plugged in. I usually use a screwdriver instead of an extension. To each his own

Yea, I think I'll go with the insulated screwdriver handle. Thanks, guys.

Yeah, I've always used a screwdriver for jumping starter solenoids and a short section of 14ga insulated wire for my GPR. The extension danskool uses is hopefully held by some insulated channellock pliers!

No need for all the jumping of the terminals. While you are waiting, swap all the wires over to the AIH relay.

And reprogram the radio twice!!! Crazy talk!!!!! Seriously, I only run my truck about once or twice a week so I was too lazy to swap them. In hind site, I probably should have since I soon will not have an AIH.

Dan (Kwikkordead) has been using his AIH relay for the last few years with no issues.
