302 build

I have a 302sb out of an 85 f150 I can't find the cam sheet I think it's a lunati hyd. cam 282/282adv. dur.-488/488 gross lift , .30 over pistonsthe heads where supposed to be built to match the cam . By this can someone give me an approximate hp/tq the motor might put out

Stock heads? Were they ported or larger valves installed? In any event you're looking at around 300hp/350tq at the crank give or take.. would need the cam grind and head details to be more specific.

There stock heads but they shaved off about a 1/2 in for clearance isues if I'm not mistaken . Now that I have to rebuild the motor anyway I was thinking about going with the 2.02/1.60 combo with an offset grind crank for 3.1 in. stroke 5.4 in. rods for 317 cid . Or set the truck back to original to a 300/6

I say don't waste your time/money on a stroker kit unless you go as big as possible.. 347cu in. But for the same money you could start with a 351 and put better heads on it and end up with a lot more HP and TQ.

It's a sham that ford didn't make there stuff as interchangeable as chevy did I'd like to use the pistons and the cam not just the cam I allready bought . Stock 302 pistons only fit a 302 . Thanks for the info .
If I finished the motor I've already started good heads and a port/polish job how much would hp/tq go up .

I agree on that for the most part, but the fact the Ford motor has a full 4" bore is the reason the chev 305 is no competition.

Unless you're running some pretty tall gears behind that cam you won't be very happy with it in a truck, that grind won't really start to pull until ~3,000 rpm.

Even with the 4spd w/granny . My Dad seems to think I should put the 300 back in it but he's partial to the motor .

I never use the granny gear around town unless I'm pulling something, but that's me.

With with more or less stock heads your engine can't breathe enough to really take advantage of that cam's powerband. 282 adv. dur. means idling ~900 rpm @~14-16 degrees base timing pulling 10-12" vacuum (maybe), built to pull between 2,500-6,000 rpm. With good heads 350+hp, with stock heads maybe less hp than the 300 you'd get from a 270 or 264 adv. dur. cam.

Considering a truck is heavier and has bigger, heavier tires than a Mustang with a comparable 302, you're starting with a less than ideal platform. Now without tall gears you spend a lot of time driving outside that cam's designed sweet spot. Without good heads I'd go no more than ~258 adv dur, good to ~5,000rpm and a lot more low end - i.e more pleasant to drive day-to-day. With good heads, you'd still need 4.11 gears to take advantage of that cam.

I've got a Mustang running a 292 cam, half a ton lighter than a truck with 3.73 gears and ~26" tires. The powerband on my cam is 500 rpm higher than yours. When I'm stuck in traffic around 40-45 mph I have to fish between 3rd and 4th gear trying to find a comfortable range to cruise. It's lazy in 4th at 2,000 rpm. A 288 cam in a truck with the usual 3.55 gears and stock 29" tires will feel even lazier at 1,600 rpm.

So I'm going to swap out the 292 for something around 274 and drop the powerband down 1,000 rpm. It sure sounds so sweet idling at 1,100 rpm, though. I hear tell Thumpr cams are pretty stout too.

So my advice would be to step back and figure out exactly you expect out of your engine. If the answer is hauling or pulling a trailer then ditch the cam you've got and get an XE250 or its equivalent. If the answer is hot rodding then keep the cam, get some AFR165s, and go to 4.11 gears.

I'll give the nod to a 300 from a durability standpoint, you've got to really go whole hog to crater an engine with seven main bearings. But for what it would take to get one to 300hp you can build a sbf that would smoke it. My $.02

I came across a 302 for free just so I can drive the truck and do some body work .In the mean time I came look a good 351 or just stay with the 302 and get the proper cam this truck running 35-36" tires
