I have an f150 someone put a 302 sb in it .I am toying with the idea with putting the factory inline 6 back in . I was wonder what's it going to take put this back together .
a complete 300, starter, frame perches if the PO removed the 6 cyl mounts, a radiator or cobble together a set of hoses to make the current radiator work as all of the fittings are on opposite sides.
I did it back in August, but went from a 390 to a 300. You should be able to pick up a complete 300 for about $300, either on Craigs list, or from a junk yard. You could pull the engine perches and mounts at the same time.
You didn't mention the year, but you still need to consider throttle linkage and exhaust connections.
The problem with buying a junkyard engine is needing to rebuild it, and not knowing if any of the alt., starter, w/pump, etc., are good.
Regarding the radiator: A shop will change the inlet/outlet sizes and/or locations for about $50.
I have both the 300 and the 302 setting in the garage I just like to see things as original as possible . 302 will be the easy way I just picked up a timing gear and I'm sure there not compatible but the 302 . It's 0.30 over with a good cam but I was thinking about stroking it out but the new pistons won't work at all in a 331 or 347 I was reading an old Mustangs and Ford mag. it had a 317 stroker build article but doesn't mention what kind of pistons they used .It only said it had an offset ground crank , 5.4 rods and a set of 0.30 over pistons .I'll go that route if the cd is the same with stroker .
Does anyone know what the pistons would be in the317 ?
The truck is a 78 f150
