I have been thinking of putting some bigger injectors in my 91
does anybody have any ideas of what type to look at and how big i can go. Is there a lot of work to do this and are there other modifications i have to make do use bigger injectors
have you turned the pump up? do you have any black smoke right now?if the answer is yes to either you are getting plenty fuel as of right now.to justify running bigger injectors you are going to need to drop your compression ,install studs everywhere and up the boost.so your going to spend a butt load more cash just to run bigger injectors and see a power increase.installing bigger injectors will only give you alot more black smoke in turn raising your EGT's and possibly melting some pistons if your not careful and you wont really notice a power increase without other mods.
i have not turned the pump up, i will get some black smoke under load but not much at all.
if you are getting a little smoke you are about at optimal setting.you can turn it up a little but before you do install a pyrometer before you mess with any settings you can turn the pump up a little (about 1 flat at a time) and then up your boost by a pound or 2 and see what happens all black smoke is is unburned fuel and your wallet flying outta your tail pipe.i know everyone wants to roll coal but in all reality its hard on your truck.how old are the ip and injectors?if over 100k or so if ya put a new ip and stock injectors in you will notice a big difference.you can also try piping your intake to get some cooler and cleaner air and you will notice a difference in that as well
the truck has 139,000 miles, i have only put 2500 on it since i have had it. i have no idea if they are the stock parts or aftermarket. my guess is stock but ??? i am very new to the diesel world and don't even know how to turn the pump up. i was told that you can buy 50hp injectors but that sounded way to easy and i figured that there had to be more to it.

yeah there is a i lttle more than just swapping injectors involved.you also have to consider new injectors on an older ip is pretty rough on a worn ip and will probably end up killing it if its still the original because it takes more pressure from the injection pump to make the new injectors "pop" opposed to the older worn injectors and then if you tossed in the 50 hp injectors you for sure would cook an older ip.im glad you asked before you bought.lol as far as the 50 hp injectors are you sure they are for the idi or are they for the powerstroke?my guess is they are for the powerstroke.if you get new injectors make sure they are pop tested before you install them so that they are opening at the same psi.as far as turning the pump up install a pyrometer first if you dont have one.after that we can walk you through turning the ip up.there are directions on here on how to do it but i would rather ya not cook your motor and think man i should have installed that pyro.lol
it does have a pyro, this truck also has a banks exhaust do you think it would help any to straight pipe it with 4 inch from the turbo back. also is there any real advantage to turning the pump a little or is it just going to cause it blow smoke
you still have a muffler?lol cut that baby off!!!! you wont notice a louder exhaust til higher rpm's and it will sound so much nicer.anyway yes free flowing exhaust is a great thing for these trucks, they love to breathe more air in and out the better.
The Banks exhaust is already a free flowing exhaust system. You are not going to gain much if anything by removing the muffler. If you have state safety inspections, the truck will fail with no muffler.
