NEED HELP
Hey,
So I have a '84 F250 with an am/fm radio... I would like to put xm in the truck but I would like to keep the stock head unit for aesthetic reasons...
What I would like to do is run the xm unit into some kind of amp/pre amp and then to the speakers... Is this possible? What would you recommend for the amp/pre amp?
I am assuming the only reason that the xm receiver needs to be connected to a head unit is for powering the speakers...

xm connects to the head unit to utilize the amp....if you are really set on keeping the factory HU you can either build the xm system to work in parallel (you will be adding amps etc), or look for an inline fm modulator....sound quality will only be equivilant to fm, but its a very clean, cheap, and simplet solution

I just want to leave head unit in... don't care if it works....
is there a single amp/pre amp solution that you would recommend? Can you run the xm directly into any amp and then output from amp to speaker system?
Also, in this case how would you handle treble/bass, balance, etc...

dont have xm receiver yet... open to suggestions....
as far as speakers I believe there are 3 in the truck now and I would probably add a small sub maybe bazooka...
I am not talking about a crazy system...

and your main goal is to keep it stock looking, or to deter theft?
where are you thinking you want to put the controller/display?
Just trying to get an idea of your goals...used to do pro (as in show quality) audio, so I am kinda **** on making sure people get exactly what they are looking for....if you are not committed to a specific recivvere there are lots of options depending on your main concerns

Both... I figure the stock radio isnt going to attract alot of attention while also keeping the look of the dash...
As far as xm receiver is concerned, my main goal is what i described above and not the specific receiver....

There is a company that builds retro looking radios that are updated with modern equipment. Custom auto sound or something is the name. They might have a unit that you can hook from your XM to the amp to give you some controls.

I think the answer your looking for is installing a cheap stereo amp and using the 2.5mm output on the XM receiver as the amp's input. it will work, but it will be a pain to set the volume and gain to give you a good range of volume without clipping.
Have you considered mounting another radio say in the glove box or under the seat?
