Bumpers

My rear bumper has seen better days and was looking to replace it. In searching the catalogs for a new one I noticed the new bumpers for sale are different in that they don't wrap around forward on the sides like my oringinal does. It is a step bumper and has mountings for what I think are a camper on the wrap arounds. Are these bumpers no longer avialable? If not I will try to straighten mine.

You are describing a west of the Mississippi only after market step bumper. From what Bill (dummy) reports was likely made by FEY Bumper.

Unless you are all warm & fuzzy about running an exact replacement anything in the 65-72 and probably more is a bolt up. The chassis width changed in 73 but other brand trucks may have had similar measurements.

Since the pic in your album only shows the right end of the bumper, I cannot tell if it's genuine Ford...or an aftermarket step bumper.

The factory step bumper has a similar slight wrap around, the brackets bolt to the bumper. There is a notch on each side that the quarter panel extensions fit into.

The factory bumper is plain steel and painted argent.

There is a contoured section in the center for the license plate, on either side is a license light.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since all rear bumpers were an optional accessory (thru 1979!), there were myriad aftermarket step bumpers offered for these trucks.

In most cases, the brackets are welded to the bumper.

Some have the short wrap around similar to what your step bumper has. Some have a much long wrap around, it's about one foot long.

Some are painted argent or are chromed plain steel. Some are painted or chromed diamond plate.

Most of the aftermarket bumpers have the license plate mounted on the drivers side directly below the tailgate.

There is one license plate light: It's either mounted to the left of the plate, or mounted directly below the center of the plate.

How about adding a pic to your album photos that shows the bumper in question.

Bill, That photo doesn't look like that fender hugger like so many western trucks have, either way he should be able to get a replacement fairly easy.

Finding one like that should be fairly easy.

I am not surprised it is obsolete it fits so bloody well. I think I will remove it and straighten with my press and hot wrench. Save some cabbage anyhow.

Thanks guys for the input.
