bad fuel pump?

My rear tank works but not my front. You hear no priming when you turn the key prior to starting so the pump either isnt getting power or its bad. What could be stopping the front pump from working?

there is a fuse for them but i dont know if it protects both pumps (or all 3?)-i would guess it does. did you run it low or out of fuel? i just bought 2 pump/sending unit assemblies from jcwhitney for $160 total. im gonna try it this weekend if it gets above 50 degrees outside.

Ya if there is one fuse for them both then the fuse is good cause my rear tank still works. If there is a seperate fuse for each pump then it could just be a fuse which would make me very happy Anyone know if the fuel pumps each have their own fuse or if their both on 1?

Unplug the tank connector and check for both power and ground. If you have both, then go in the tank for the pump. If no power, work your way back to the power switch. I'm not positive where the tank ground connects on an 89, but you can be sure its away from the tank. Don't discount continuity to ground.

Yeah, definitely do it this way. I just changed my pump a little while back and worked my way from the fuse panel back. Which wasted my time, and I tore apart my passenger side kick panel for nothing. I'd bet money that it was your fuel pump, if one primes and not the other. Start at the pumps electrical disconnect

If not the pump then it would be the selector switch on the dash.

You do not have a fuse for the pumps, you have a fuse link near the starter solenoid and it would be good along with the fuel pump relay and Inertia switch if the pumps in one tank runs along with the high pressure pump on the frame.

Thanks everyone for the great info! As soon as it warms up a little more I will be fixing this problem along with ball joints.

Not 100% sure, but I think that each pump has a relay in the engine compartment, next to the EEC test plug. If so, try swaping the relays and see it that works.

There is only one relay for both tanks.
