Got a 93 explorer limited with 4wd, but 4wd does not seem to work. Hubs say they are automatic so you cant lock them. Do these have vacum lines or something that might be blocked?
The hubs are purely mechanical -- no vacuum lines. The rotation of the axleshaft is what causes the mechanism to engage.
The 4wd failing is usually one of two things on these: the transfer case shift motor is unable to shift the transfer case, or the hubs are failing to engage. The first step in diagnosing these would be to determine which part is failing: t-case or hubs. When you push the button, does the 4x4 light come on? Does the front driveshaft rotate? In 2H, can you rotate the driveshaft by hand and get both hubs to lock?
