cdr removal

any detrimental effects to just removing the cdr and doing an overboard vent?
I have a banks turbo with the k&n filter and am looking at removing the filter portion of the set up (cut it off only keeping the duct from turbo to inlet) and relocating the radiator overflow and windshield washer bottles and running a 6637 filter where the bottles are currently located.
my only issue is the cdr, I don't want it hooked into the intake oiling everything!

I guess you could run a drip tube, but it will smoke and keep everything messy.

Perfect timing with this post helifixer... I have been thinking about removing my CDR and venting it overboard.... I know most recciprocating engine aircraft seem to vent the crankcase overboard (mostly for simplicity...) and I know a guy that runs a diesel toyota landcruiser who vents his overboard without any issues. I second the question: any detrimental effects that anyone knows of??

Running the pipe down into the airstream under the vehicle is commonly called a "road draft tube". All engines were vented this way till the PCV valve came along(gas engines). The air running past the pipe underneath will have a "chimney affect" and suck the bad stuff out of the engine. But it is messy and I have heard there is a lot of smoke that comes out sometimes while at a stoplight.

Mine was vented straight out the back of the pan by the PO, sometimes I get a little dizzy from fumes at a long light and after a long trip my undercarriage looks a little nasty.

***** Oil Catch Tank Breather UNIVERSAL FITMENT ***** : eBay Motors (item 200426845284 end time Feb-09-10 12:30:11 PST) You could put something like this in the line to prevent drips. Probably cheaper ones out there.

Pre-emission control diesels were all vented in this fashion: "the stinkpipe". Lots of Cat engines had a simple mesh device to catch some of the oil in the mist and let it drain back into the valve cover. I have thought of this myself as my miles are virtually all on the highway.

What about one of those water seperators for air lines? Wonder if they would seperate the oil mist and allow you to then vent it into the exhaust?

better have your wood screws in because the fumes will blow your doors completely off!!! haha. Just get a damn cdr, out of all the things in the IDI world, the CDR is the least expensive. Come on fellas.

well this mod isn't to prevent costs/cleaning's of the CDR,but to bypass this only emissions crap we have on the IDI.
it would help keep things clean.the IDI can burn oil no problem,so it's not as bad as on a gasser.but it would reduce oil consumption quite a bit,if these oil gasses could enter a holding tank, and run back into the engine rather than keep burning it.
these gasses would have to escape into the air tho,and im afraid it would just get to dang messy to be worth the hassle.
better keeping this emissions crap left alone i think and just keep checking the oil level.otherwise its just gunna stink all the time like an oil burner probably.
how can it be much better for the environment tho right? it re-burns it and then out the tail pipe no matter what.but i guess it must exit cleaner.
ahh well.it keeps things clean and stink free anyway.
but it would reduce oil consumption.would be interesting if someone comes up with a stink/mess free way.but i dont think you can have it both ways.it either vents outside and stinks or inside to be reburnt like the CDR does, and out the pipe.
if you vent it out the exhaust, well, you still loose the oil,but who wants oil gasses on their exhaust.that may be bad too lol.

well i did this in an effort to extend the old truck engine life time. It was horrible to say the least. if your truck is solid then it will be fine but if it has issues, it will make a damned mess for sure!!

oh you did bypass yours.
yeah,i don't think burning that little bit of oil,is going to harm the IDI at all.
nor any diesel for that matter.
i wouldn't not run a CDR for that.put one back on,so you can breath man lol.

I guess it would depend on what kind of shape your engine is in. My 96 cat and 97and99 detroits have the draft tubes and dont get anything messy, but I have seen some that put out some serious blowby.

My old 085 turbo does not even use a cdr I think I will retrofit one one the valve cover like the later turbos, but have been wandering since the cdr was originally in the genter of the intake, if there would be any benifit to installing one on each valve cover.
