vin decoding help needed...

just got a beater 66 f-100 and i'm in LOVE. Dude said it was a 352 but my old Chilton's says the "Y" in position 4 means a 390 w/ a 2bb. it shows only 4bb carbs on 352 (with an "X"). It also says a "Z" engine code would mean 390 with a 4bb. The car has a 2bb on it and a "Y" in the vin. Is the chilton's manual correct? Is there another way to tell on the engine itself maybe? Am I asking too many questions?

Confused in California...

If you search the forum you'll ge a lot of good threads to read and follow.

I copied one reply for you - thanks to dusty64f100

There's a vin decoder on site
https://www.ford-trucks.com/vin-decod...x.php?a=decode
This will have most of the rest
http://home.earthlink.net/~threynold...specs6166.html
Decode your own DSO- first two digits
http://66ford.fordregistries.com/DEC...%20TAG/dso.htm

There is great helpin this forum, search the previous threads then ask the gurus here.

For 1966 trucks the VIN decode was pretty easy...only 1 V8 was ever offered from Ford in the F100-250 truck which was the 352 which in the VIN IS code Y, Anything else denotes a 6 cylinder.

In-correct.

It shows only 4bb carbs on 352 (with an "X"). It also says a "Z" engine code would mean 390 with a 4bbl.
That's correct...but...for Passenger Cars only.

The car car? (An F100 is not a car) has a 2bb on it and a "Y" in the vin.

Is the chilton's manual correct?
Obviously not, if all those VIN engine codes are the 4th digit.
Welcome to FTE

What a confusing mess!

1961/1980 trucks: The VIN engine code is the 4th digit.

1960/79 Passenger Cars: The VIN engine code is the 5th digit.

The X & Z VIN engine codes were only used for Passenger Cars.

Y was used for both F100/350's and Passenger Cars, but it does not mean the same thing.

Y = 1966/67 F100/350 352 2V and 1968/76 F100/350 360 2V.

1968 was the first year the 390 was installed in F100/350's: H = 390 2V (1968/76) / M = 390 4V (1974/76 only).

1966 F100 2WD: The VIN begins with F10Y = F100 2WD with the 352 2V.

btw: FTE's VIN decoders have errors and omissions. If you want the facts, post the info here, or send it to me via a P/M or by email.

Since November 2006, I've decoded well over 700 VIN's and Warranty Plate codes for FTE members using Ford Parts Catalogs.

There is only one reference that has it correct and it is the books ND has for the parts and a factory shop manual.

One noted exception is the 65 early printing that lists the 352 in LD trucks with a 4v carb...Later books are corrected.

The vin search feature here at FTE should be Banned and scrapped as it contains holes and errors Mack trucks can drive through.
