ball joint removal
I am trying to remove the upper ball joint on my 2004 ford f250 4x4. I have removed everything but the axle shaft. do you have to take the axle out to remove the ball joint? i have tried to take the axle out but there seems to be some sort of seal holding it in the knuckle. do i have to break out the torch to get the lower ball joint out because it doesn't want to budge.

I have an 03, I had a problem getting the bearings out after removing the 4 nuts on the knuckle because of rust. What I did was to cut the ball joint stems between the knuckle and the axle housing with a die grinder. soaked the the knuckle in oil overnight. Came apart easy the next day. As the far as the seal goes it should come out fairly easy

use the ball joint press loan a tool at autozone. It works wonders. I've replaced both sides on my truck. The axle can be a pain to get out. I pulled the unit bearing and shaft out each time I did my ball joints.
