I can't believe I'm typing this!! My wife just called me and said something is scraping and the truck (98 Expedition) is very loud. She had just gone out so she turned around and came back. I go out there and the rear section of the Gibson cat-back is dangling from the rear axle. Some how the damn thing must have slipped out of the muffler section and was bouncing around under there. After a combination of anger and laughing, I realized I must not have tightnened the clamp enough. It has been on there for about 4 years. This really sucks. And the last few inches of it broke off somewhere (with the chrome tip). So I'll have to see if I can order just that 1 section. I'll check Gibson's warranty policy but I'm sure ignorance ain't covered. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
Its actually almost 6 years its been on there. I called Gibson and the guy tells me since I live in Pa I should never have bought aluminized and the rest of the exhaust is probably rotted and it just fell apart. So then he tells me I should buy a new one, stainless of course, for almost $600. I gave it a good inspection and I can't find anything wrong with it. The muffler is fine along with all the piping. The last small section must have broke when it hit the ground and that is only $35 to replace. So this confirms what my wife has always said to me for the 13 years we've been married. I'm an idiot. I must not have tightened that 1 clamp and after all this time it worked itself loose. So I got off lucky. It could have caused more damage or God forbid, it could have broken off in traffic and hurt someone. Tough lesson learned.
Icefan, Thanks for the heads up. All of us that install our own systems have a great responsibility to be sure that the parts don't fly. The newer band style clamps sound great but the old school single U-bolt clamps give a real good indicator ( crimped tube ) of there install integrity. While they make it a darn pain to remove sections, and don't look to cool they do create a double tube bead retaining system in a pinch..
