Seems like No Voltage

Last night I moved my truck around the driveway and it ran great, just like it should. I went to start it up about an hour later that night and the check engine light came on and it was only reading 8-9 volts and it was making a weird clicking noise. The same thing happened once or twice before but the problem has always gone away. I went out to see what it would do today, no lights came on and it wasn't showing any voltage...when I turned the key back to where you can listen to the radio it worked fine but all my presets were erased. I am wondering if I have a bad ground or connection somewhere and was just wondering if anyone could help me out or if any of you have had similar problems.

Another Question is about OBD II code scanners. I was wondering if there are any for our trucks that are available for a reasonable price, new or used.

Thanks in Advance!!!

(My truck is a 97 F250 5 speed 2wd)

I have a scanner at work and my friends have some so I can't help w/that question.
Batteries or battery cables. Check the voltage while the truck is running. It should be charging around 3-14 volts or abouts. I would look at the battery cables make sure they are real clean.
OH and welcome to FTE!!

Yep, clean them cable connectors at all ends including the relays for the starter as well as the grounds, believe theres a ground from the motor to the frame/firewall as well. next step would be to have your batterys tested with a load tester to make sure you don't have a bad cell or 2......

You can test the batteries (after letting it run and charge some) in a field expedient or "down and dirty" way. If you can pull the caps off you can put your negative lead on the negative terminal (-). Now put your positive lead in the first cell....yup, right in the water....you should have about 2 volts. Then go to the next cell you should have about 4 volts and 6 volts in the 3rd cell and so on up to the 6th cell should have about 12 volts (2 volts per cell).
This is a quick down and dirty test to see if you have a bad cell. ALSO 1 bad cell can drain both batteries.
