Thermostat

Hi, I have a 73 f-250/390 and the other day I pulled off my thermostat housing to have a look at my thermostat and the stupid thing was just sitting deep inside the intake floating around in the coolant...now correct me if i'm wrong but that's not how a thermostat is supposed to be mounted, if you can call that mounted. The thermostat is the correct size to fit the recess in the housing but the recess itself is a good 1/16" smaller in diameter than the opening in the manifold. To my knowledge everything on my engine is stock and the housing is the original. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanx.

You need to replace your thermostat and housing with one from an early Ford. The FE series engine used two different sizes of these, but I can't remember when they went to the smaller size. If your truck is a '73, then someone has swapped an earlier manifold onto your motor, and used the '73 t-stat and housing.
