I am looking to buy a 1987 f-250 4x4 but it will need some tranny work and I have been trying to figure out which one is in there. The guy says it has a 302 in it, so if any body can help me out that would be great. Also I haven't bought it yet but he wants 300 and it still moves what do you guys think should I buy it? Thanks for the help

hey if the body is in good shape and not much rust -it's well worth $300
hopefully it's the c-6 much cheaper to rebuild
I ain't never come across a 4x4 that cheap

look on the dash just to the right of the steering column, if there is an o.d. on/off button then it is the E4OD (very good 4 spd trans). If there is no button, then it is the
C6.

If the body is good, and it has PW/PL I would jump on that deal even if there was no driveline at all, but then I am also a mechanic so replacing an engine or trans isn't so bad for me.
If you have to pay a shop to rebuild and install the trans, that is when it could get messy. last 4x4 trans I did was on a 96 chevy 1/2 ton, my boss charged a little over $2,000 to through in a jy trans. And that is about what blue book would be for a 1987 ford.

Hey thanks guys for all the input. I just got an email from the guy he says it is the AOD tranny He also says that it is just the regular 250 not the heavy one. So you all think i should jump on it, I will then. I wonder if anybody has an idea of how much a rebuild kit would be for it. I will rebuild it if not to much if so i will just have to find a used one somewhere. Thanks again fellas. I do appreciate it. Oh yeah I know and it still moves he says you just have to rev it up a little to get it going, he also says that reverse works perfect and the motor runs, it has pl,pw,cruise it comes with a pioneer cd player a tool box diamond plate a fifth wheel hitch the front axle was gone though in march of last year new u-joints wheel bearings repacked they replaced the filter for the tranny to then to see if that would help but it did not. The only thing is that I would have to try to drive it home. But then i could work on it. I think I am going to go for it and buy the truck.

Here is some pics of it:

not a bad looking truck at all, and the price couldnt be better, but to quote his posting of
"It is an automatic overdrive and has a 5L motor"

an auto overdrive, wouldnt that make it the E4OD

He says it is an AOD tranny and that they changed the filter last spring so it is probably AOD is that a good tranny or is the C6 better. I don't know, but I am going to see if he would take 200 bucks instead of 300 if he will do that I am going to buy the truck. Thanks again everybody for the input.

Easiest way to tell what it has is to look at the TRANS code on the door post sticker. If it's an E it's the E4OD and if it's a T or a U it's the AOD.

My guess would be AOD. For $300 if it runs and drives buy it. Even if you have to spend $1000 fixing it up you're still money ahead.

For $300 I've seen much uglier trucks.

I've heard the $1000 for a 4x4 rule before too but I bet I could find a 4x4 that no one would spend a grand on.

I have seen some myself Andy, I know 300 isn't bad but I only have like 400 dollars to work with, if i had more money I wouldn't even ask him to drop the price I would just pay the man what he was asking for. But I am thinking I will need some extra money to fix so I have asked if he will take 200 and if he won't then I guess I will give him the 300 for it.
