351M or 400?
I bought this 78 F150 4x4, and was told that it had a 351M. The valve cover says it's a 400, but then again it's also got the small diameter distributor cap on it.
My question is:
Is there any easy way to figure out if it displaces 351 or 400 without pulling a piston out or measuring he crank? Are the vacuum readings different or something simple like that?
Also, do you guys know of anybody that has aftermarket (re: good) heads for these things? I love TFS Twisted Wedge heads for the Windsor, but they don't make em for this. Port the stock heads?
Thanks guys, I've learned ALOT about my favorite trucks (73-79 F series) by reading through this entire site and message board!

But, as we all should know, the 351M/400 covers are interchangable..as well as the distributor.. Assuming that the guy that had this before me did some of his own work (took out the second mid-ship fuel tank, put in the high-output heater system, custom 4-row radiator, changed the doors, painted it a few times[interior is red, and underneath that is blue, as well as the outside])
Which is why I'm figuring that this isn't the original engine.
Oh yea, does anybody know the model of transfer case this is suppose to have? I thought 78-79 had the same but mine doesn't have the same shift-pattern as my parent's old 79 did.

Also, the VIN on the truck and the VIN on the doors aren't the same..Dont'cha just love buying really thrashed old trucks? At least I have a solid mechanical base..
