400M power

hi, I have a 79 F-250 w/ a 400M. I was wondering what you guys could recommend for getting the most power out of this engine without tearing it apart. It only has 81,000 mi. on it so the internals are fine. by the way this truck is going to be used only as a mud bogger so gas mileage is not a concern at all. What 4 bbl carb and intake would you recommend. I also plan on running open headers. what else can I do for power.

p.s. I dont want to spend more than $1000 on engine components.

Thank you.

look at this motor's stock power. look at the compression. check the cam specs. it needs pistons, and a new cam. and for power, a manifold and carb. read some of the build books. open headers will make it loud, not more powerful, and you will probably warp the valves when the cold air hits them.
