GOOD NEWS FORD

Ford to rehire 1,200 workers.

The company plans to build a redesigned Explorer SUV at its Chicago complex.

OK, America, let's give a cheer to Ford Motor (F).

The automaker is expected to announce Tuesday it will add 1,200 factory jobs at its Chicago assembly complex, where the company currently builds the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans.

The Explorer, one of Ford's most popular vehicles, has been redesigned for a smaller, more fuel-efficient car platform that's produced at the Chicago plant.

Great link and thanks. I'm a little disturbed that the Exploder will apparently be losing it's truck like capabilities. Here we go again, playing follow the leader to GM's fiddle.

The fact that Ford is adding those jobs is great!

I will say that having driven a 2007 Explorer almost everyday for the past three years, I'm anxious to see if the new unibody design improves the ride. The '07 that I drive is a good vehicle but the ride isn't the best I've ever had. The boost in fuel economy will be nice as well. Ours averages about 15 or so which is actually worse than my F-250.

Giving the Explorer a more car like ride might not be a bad idea. I would assume that most Explorers are used for taking children to sports, getting groceries and such. Could be a move in the right direction.

Good points, I was even thinking about ride and MPG's. My concern is Ford giving up a capable mid sized truck based platform while GM still offers the trailblazer and it's GMC twin.

Watching the news last night, everyone is giving Ford huge kudos for hiring/re-hiring all those people. They also mentioned that these folks will be paid about $14.00 per hour which I'm guessing is about half what a more senior employee would earn.

Hopefully that strategy will help keep the prices of the new ones from going up too far.
