Opinions needed on tie-rods/ends/ball joints
With the vehicle parked, how much movement is acceptable when you twist the tie-rods by hand? I had a disagreement with someone about this...(someone in their early 20's who has a lot less vehicle-repair and driving experience than me).

Just twisting the tie-rods isn't a good test. Have someone move the steering wheel back & forth while you hold the tie-rod (check both sides). If you feel any clunking, one of the tie-rod ends is bad.

I've always been able to twist my tie rod ends. it's a ball and socket type of joint, you can twist it when it is not on the truck. If it moves laterally, then you got a problem if there is a clunk or plan in the joint itself.
