shifting problem

if i accelerate slowly (or some would say at a normal speed) then it shifts fine (sometimes shifts into second a little hard) but if i try to put a little gas into it then my truck will rev high but not shift to second, rev again but not go into second, and it will do this a few times before going into second. i'm guessing its the transmission but i thought i would see if any one else had experianced this and if they know exactly whats happening. so far i've just been accelerating slow to prevent it from happening but thought i should still get it fixed just incase i feel like gasing it. also, when driving (and when the above does not happen) i can feel it shift into second but not into 3rd. when should it be shifting into 3rd? i'm sure its going to 3rd because when i hit the freeway (55-60 mpr) it doesn't feel or sound like its going to explode. just curious.
i have a 1968 f250, c6 transmission automatic (p,n,d,1,2).

Have you dropped the pan and check the condition of the fluid and filter? If it is coming unglued the fluid will have a dark color and a burned smell to it. Thats where I would start. I have an 82 F100 with a C6 that has around 300K on it and still going. They are very robust and hard to kill. It makes the most God awful noise once in awhile when cornering but it just keeps trucking. I don't know much about the internal gizzards of them but someone that knows more than I will chime in I'm sure.

You might try checking any vacuum lines for leaks, I believe there is a shift modulator that depends on this. I have heard that some of these modulators are adjustable and some are not. But for sure check your vacuum.
