Windshield wiper disaster

A few days ago I replaced both of the linkages from the wiper motor to the left & right wiper pivots. Silver on the driver's side, black on the passenger's side. Within an hour or two, the wipers are beating themselves to death. I inspected the links and the rubber bushings are shredded. Did I have them overlapped in the center in the wrong order? I think I had the left link on the motor first and the right side next. Wipers aren't an option in my part of the country! I'd appreciate some feedback.

Parts catalog pic (Section 175, Page 4) agrees with you, showing the left arm mounting first, then the right arm.

The problem with these arms is, the bushings are not replaceable, so you have to buy the arm to get them.

FTE member camperspecial65 may have some extra parts, he lives in Olympia.

Thanks Bill, I'm at home away from my catalog today. These were brand new DC linkages. I don't think it was a part failure. I probably didn't operate the wipers more than two hours when they started clattering. I got back up under the dash and found the bushings were reduced to rubber powder. They sent new clip with the linkages that were very tight to install and a different design than the originals. CS65 is several hours south of me. I'll probably mail order another pair as they're pretty reasonable. If anyone else has delt with this, I'd love some feedback.

Did you change the park location on the wipers at all? inadvertently move the adjust lever?

If you put a little over center on them they may do this or the re-pops are just junk. I would lean more to junk.

Garbz, Not sure where the park adjustment is. I did move the wiper arms on the splined pivots trying to get the down stroke to not smack the bottom of the windshield. I can get it adjusted fine in my shop, but when I get out on the road, full voltage from the charging system, a little rain to lube the windshield and add some wind, they're smacking the windshield gasket. I might chase the clips Bill found. The reproduction clips are very tight and I think they are digging into the rubber grommets. I'm gonna be bummed if the repop linkages are junk

The adjustment is on the side of the transmission. easy to bump up under there.

Is the brass bushing in side the rubber part on the new arms past the rubber a bit. Or is the rubber past the center brass bushing? The brass center is what should touch the arm and clip not any part of the rubber as it is for shock absorption only.

Here s a shot that shows the bushing head on. it stcks out past the rubber.

Here is it from the side

well thats not as bad as mine. mine dont even work and someone turned them on when they did work without a wiper blade on it and it scratched the glass. so i need to fix the motors or whatever is wrong with them and eventually get a new windshield.

Garbz, It's hard to say at this point as the rubber is completely shredded out of the link. The brass bushings are just rattling loose in the linkage. I was completely unaware of the adjustment on the transmission. I am reluctant to change any adjustment as I did have operational wipers until I replaced the links. I thought the wipers were a little clunky and I have quieted them on past trucks with new links. I thought I knew what I was doing. I just had a new windshield installed because the old one had a couple of stars and it was pretty scratched. Like I said, in this country, you need GOOD wipers. I don't mind at all that I have the single speed, but I can't stand to have them beating themselves to death. We don't get a lot of heavy rain here, just a little rain ALL the time! One good thing about this problem is that I got a good look at the underside of the dash and I realized that the dash is slotted for a speaker. All I have to do is cut the pad. I picked up a grille when I found an original radio. I just sent the radio to Wards Classic Radio for an overhaul. If I can't quiet the wipers down, at least I can turn up Rush and Glenn!

With some Hannity thrown in.....

I would guess that the reproductions leave a little to be desired. I have not looked at them close.

One question are they the same length or is one shorter than the other? When i took apart my 63 it had 2 black rods. The 64 has the correct short and long but has been upgraded to 2 speed with intermittent wipers. .I have run in to this quite a few times over the years where the truck had 2 of the same rods either the black or silver.

I would look up CS and see if he has a spare set. and start form there with good stock rods.

If you have a shop manual for your truck it describes setting the park and correct placement of the wiper arms after it has parked.

Garbz, I am aware of the two lengths and I know I have that right. Silver for the driver's side and black for the passenger. I'm back to "work" today, so I can get on the phone and make some calls for parts. I don't have a shop manual for my truck. I'm not sure what's available out there, but I'd like to find one.

The spring clip is the key to everything holding together. As I recall, originally the bushings that were used were plastic...Its been years since Ive dealt with wiper linkage.

If you need anything, give a holler...

wiper problems on my 64 F100

When I painted My 64 F100 with one speed wipers I took the chrome arms and the chrome nuts off the wiper shafts that come out through the drain grill so I could mask them off real well. When I put it back together the wipers will flop over to the left all the way so that the arm is almost off the windshield to the left and the right one is past center, and they stick there.

My first thought was of course move the blade a bit further toward the right on the splines so they didn't travel so far. But no matter how far I rotate them to the right they will always flop past and stick there.

I was desperate one day in the rain so I took a bungie strap and hooked it on the arm on the drivers side of the wiper motor inside under the dash. I pulled it straight down and hooked it real tight. As long as the strap held together the wipers worked well.
Where do I start on this problem?

If when you had your truck painted you didnt touch anything UNDER the dash inside then you most likely have either stripped out wiper arms or wiper pivots. You may wanna inspect really closely the pivots to to see if there is what I call as master spline...or a blank spot or pourposely left flat spot...so they only go on one way...steering wheels and steering box pitman arms both have this design so those parts only go on one way properly.

Also, if those lil stainless spring clips are gone from the inside look on the floor or wherever they might land as thats a lock for the linkage and the pivot and the linkage and the wiper motor.

CS65, Thanks for the offer. I looked around my shop and found the original clips. I'm betting the replacement clips are the cause of the early death of the new likages. They obviously put a lot of down force on the bushings. There is no preload function with the originals. I ordered another set of links to install with the original clips.
