I just have a few questions for all you guys that are use to working on old rusted pieces..
Got any tips or tricks to getting 120,000 mile old head bolts, intake bolts, and manifold bolts off?
This truck is my first big rebuild, and although the work can sometimes suck, I really love these old trucks..
But, I'm looking at a top end rebuild, becuase it looks like I have some burnt valves(consistent single-cylinder miss). I don't believe the heads or manifolds have EVER been off this engine.. What can I do to make busted bolts go easier?
Patience is the KEY!!! First remove the intake. The bolt heads are 9/16 and use 6pt. sockets. If the bolt heads are buggered.. use a 14mm 6pt socket or a 1/2 6pt socket and tap it in place. The heads will come off easily enough. Leave the exhaust manifolds in place till later. When the heads are off, soak the manifold bolts in penetrating oil for DAYS!!!! Be very patient and careful and you can remove the bolts without wringing the heads off them. Use high quality sockets and tap the bolts occasionally while soaking to help the penetrating oil. The brand PB Blaster works well.
Man, that PB Blaster does do wonders, doesn't it? The state won't sell it here for some odd reason, making that stuff like gold. But my dad buys this other stuff from his work (he works in a bindry, some of the machines are almost held together by this $75 a roll (bulk pricing!!) duct tape.)
It comes in a red can, I think 3M makes it. It worked pretty damned good also.
