Hi everyone. This morning I tried to start my 03 6.0 PSD and it didn´t. it just made 1/8 of a turn or so and then nothing. I pop up the hood and the coolant reservoir was empty. A few days ago I saw some sporadic white smoke coming from the exhaust, maybe a little loss of power too, but nothing else. Oil has no water. I think my engine Hydrolocked. What do you think about this? how simple is to drain the water out? Where are the glow plugs? can this be done without removing the cab or engine? Thanks a lot!
Sounds like your EGR cooler took a dump and hydrolocked. Pull your EGR valve and see if there is coolant in the intake. MAYBE with some luck since your truck didnt quit while driving, it just leaked in once it was parked and hydrolocked. Maybe you can pull your glow plugs, spin over and replace or remove the egr cooler if thats the problem.
Check the batterys and starter first.Sounds like a hydro lock, the GPs can be removed without much trouble. You will need a EGR cooler and likely an oil cooler it is also possible that there is engine damage if you did infact hydrolock. If you are not going to do all the work yourself don't bother with the GPs,it will lock again if you run it and the EGR cooler isn't replaced.
Does anyone have a pdf or pics of how to remove GP? or at least were are they?
How much does the EGR and oil cooler cost? do you recomend a EGR cooler delete?
Batteries and starter are OK. Should i turn the engine by hand first or just crank it?
I went to the Dakar 2010 rally, so I checked last week. It was OK.
I was thinking that if the coolant was lost over a longer period of time, the hydrolock and loss of coolant would not necessarily be related, although the probability of that would be rather low. The closest I have ever been to being a certified tech was staying a night in a Holiday Inn Express. You've already gotten some excellent advice from some actual techs so my only use here is to hold the flashlight.
remove the glow plug harness to allow acess to the glow plugs. ford has a special tool to release the harness.
Is there any common tool i can use? Lets say Ford dealers aren´t very friendly in Chile. Thats why i´m doing this job myself, or at least i´ll try to .
thanks for the advice.
There is a small ring on the glow plug connector that the special tool slides into to provide something to grip while removing the connector. You just need something similar, like a fork missing a tine or two, or maybe a trim panel tool. Look at the connector and you'll figure it out. DO NOT pull on the wire to remove the connector as the harness is brittle and WILL break.
He has an 03 so it has a solid buss bar that can be pryed off with a screw driver or such.Start at one end and slowly pry it out evenly down the length of the bar.The GP buss bar is above the exhaust manifold on both heads,it is a 1/2"square tube that runs the length of the motor. http://dan.prxy.org/Truck/6L_bible_h.../Page_067.html At the top of this forum is the 6.0 Tech section take an hour or so and read through it there is great info that will help you in there.
