Inline 6 with Std. Transmission.

I have a `67 F-100 that I have restored mechanically. The truck is in great shape. It has the 240/300 6 cyl. with a on-the-column 3 speed. I have put a lot of money in the motor and I really like the performance. However, I don't like the 3 speed. I would like to transplant the 3-speed with a 4 or 5 speed. Can anybody give me some advice on this subject?

I would like to ask a dumb question, why do you want more gears to change.

What end result are you seeking?

I used to have a 3 sp behind my 76 300. I liked the fact that the shifter diden't interfere w/ a 3rd passenger. The shift from 1st to 2nd was just about impossible to accomplish at greater than Grandpa speed. I ended up swapping it to auto. I now have a 4 sp. With Granny low it's still a 3 sp however the 2nd to 3rd (1st to 2nd) is a lot snappier and more satisfying when you want to move. I have been keeping my eyes open for a way to have a modern overdrive tranny at a reasonable price. I have an 89 Camaro w/ a 305 and a T5. I dig the T5. I have seen in the mustang mags restomods that make use of the T5. I would question how they would hold up in a heavier vehicle. Bell housings are a serious issue. The modern trucks use a hydraulic clutch linkage. The Mustangs use a cable. I saw an article about putting T5's in old mustangs and one company featured would alter your bellhousing by drilling the proper holes in the right alignment to use a T5. To do something like this would require a lot a inguinuity and an immunity to naysaying from people who don't like to deal with custom work and probably a lot of money. One option although not terribly popular is the 4sp that came out in 78 in pickups and vans. Not a granny low toploader but a 3sp w/ overdrive. It uses linkages on the side of the tranny like a 3sp. I had a job for a while driving an early 80's E150 w/ a 300/6 and this tranny. I kind of dug it in a funky kind of way. The gate was not very tight and in a van the gearshift throw was ridiculous. It would bolt in to your truck if you are looking for an overdrive without spending huge dollars (You'd have to cut a hole in your floor of coarse) I'd really like to find info on adapting a hydraulic clutch to the older truck and utilizing the late model 5sp. My Dad has a 95 F150 w/ 300 and 5sp and between the fuel injection and the tranny, and a more aerodynamic design he gets impessive gas mileage. I also drove vans w/ C5 overdrive auto. This I don't believe needs a computer like the AOD however the ratio's were terrible. It couln't decide between 3rd and OD at the then 55mph. It was pretty doggy compared to the AOD. Your Engine shares bellhousing pattern w/ smallblock V8 (some 289,302,351W,351C) Also think about where the shifter is in a car type top loader if you are contemplating this. On the T5, it's well back on the tailshaft. You'd have to have bucket seats for where the shifter would locate. Personally I am digging the granny low 4sp I'm now driveing. Less shifting to interupt coffee. I always got the Camaro to shift.
