Has anyone tested out the sulfur substitute I'm seeing in stores all of a sudden? I swore my truck liked low sulfur or even high sulfur the few times I ran it better than this ULSD. I put a bottle in the truck and we'll see what happens.
I don't see how sulfur contributes to performance either way. Except that when included in the combustion process it is converted to sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide has an affinity for water and when conbined with the humidity in the combustion process, converts to sulfuric acid. That's why lubricants designed for engines run on high sulfur fuel have a much greater TBN.
I have read though, that sulfur contrubutes to the lubricity of the fuel being worked in the fuel injection pump. I think it is largely overblown though and is mostly just a fear based reaction to the switch to LSFO. Same thing happened when lead was removed from gasoline.
Very old injection pumps dont like ULSD. The lubricity additive may work if it hasnt already done damage. A permanent fix is to rebuild the pump with ceramic pistons. We had to do this on a 1971 vintage industrial engine that eventually quit running altogether on ULSD.
Since your signature shows a 2006 Powerstroke, which doesnt use an injection pump, I dont think you have an issue or need any additive.
