The harness and all the electronics under the dash/hood. I'm not going to pay for the eec if it's for an automatic, I'll just have to shop around for the Mustang one. I'm going to bring tape, a Sharpie, and the camera for future reference but it's always nice to know what to look for. I reckon I'll pick up a manual for the newer trucks on the way.
The harness isn't really much use to you unless it is a mass air truck, but if you find one of those take the computer, MAF meter, and the whole engine harness from the computer connector out.
The Bronco sat for a decade before I got it, the tank was in terrible shape, so it was cheaper to put a new poly tank on than get the old one refurbished. I'm thinking I'll just grab all the plumbing from the fuel rails to the tank off an EFI Bronco rather than reinvent the wheel. I should be able to use the sending unit/in-tank pump from an 87-89 Bronco with the tank I've got now? They are both 2", apparently.
Well, I reckon I'm committed to this MAF EFI swap now. I just picked up a Performer 5.0 intake for $200 off Craigslist. He was switching from SD EFI to carb on an '88 Mustang, so he threw in the EGR plate, injectors, and factory fuel rail/regulator. That gets me about 1/3 of the way there...
Any suggestions on what size throttle body I should try to find? He had a 75mm, but I figured that might be a bit much for a relatively tame 302 (XE250 cam, upgraded heads (~230/150 cfm), shorties and duals). I'm thinking 65mm should be just about right?
I found two 94 F150s being parted close by, I'm hoping there's a deal to be made on the harness and associated parts. The A9L is a direct plug-in with the 94 F150 harness, correct? No worries with the E4OD (both trucks are automatic)?
EDIT - Well I see they have the F150 and Mustang pin charts at Ford Fuel Injection and they are not a direct plug-in. Would I be better off repinning the truck harness or snagging a Mustang harness?
I fell a$$ backwards into another EEC plus the complete, uncut harness from an 89 Mustang, so I guess that's the way I'm going to go. The brain from the feedback carb that was on the truck was mounted under the dash over the driveline, I'm thinking that's where I'll mount the EEC.
I'll probably still go plunder one, maybe both of the '94 F150s I found. Think there might be a market for the EEC and harness from a 5.0 auto tranny MAF truck?
If you were going to use the wiring harness from the Mustang, you may not be able to install the computer under the dash. The computer mounts in the passenger kick panel of a Mustang, and its wiring harness has specific lengths to the bundle of wires to support that installation.
Unless you plan on selling the mustang harness I suggest you disassemble it and remove the MAF and injector portions complete with the EEC connector pins attached so it can be inserted into an SD truck harness or used as an overlay.
I'm planning to unwrap the harness to check for bad wires and clean it up anyway, so I'll have that flexibility to route wires as needed. Honestly, I'd rather have to break out the soldering gun and lengthen a few wires if needed than go through the rigmarole of re-pinning half the harness.
Y'all are probably right, I reckon I'll know for sure once I can get the harness and EEC into the truck for a test fit. Seems like coming in just off center in the engine compartment will put the harness right where it needs to be on the engine. I shall live and learn, adapt, overcome, and improvise on sensor/relay placement from there.
Man, went to harvest the 94 F150 today. Compared to an 89 Mustang the harness is a whole different animal. It's completely woven into the main harness and power/fuse box, completely different injector harness plug...I ended up having to cut ~15 wires right at the driver's side edge of the radiator to pull the whole kit and kaboodle out. I'll sit down tomorrow during the race and do an autopsy.
It didn't have a TFI dizzy either, it doesn't look all that different from a Duraspark one inside and out.
That last star-bit bolt holding down the upper was a nice touch too. Well played, Ford. And a hat tip to Autozone for having the right sized bit and a six inch long 1/4" drive extension.
Anyway, I got the harness, a HUG2 EEC, the airbox, fresh air intake, MAF, and dual TB adapter, upper and lower plus rails and injectors, everything in the engine bay. The gas pedal and linkage too. It was sitting on a trailer with a couple of flat tires so I couldn't get underneath it which was a bummer. Can't complain for $100.
Now if we can just get a couple of weeks of decent weather so I can get to swapping engines.
Yeah I could have told you about the dizzy, Ford moved it off the distributor back in '91 or so because of overheating problems. But if you're going to use that harness like it is for the most part then the truck dizzy and remote TFI will be fine.
Here's the EEC harness, main harness, and fuse box all wedded together. The wires at the top left are the headlight, etc. and stuff I cut. I'm guessing that's the remote TFI at the front left?
The injector harness uses a completely different plug than the Mustang harness too.
And the relay/fuse box. I'm going to try and cut out the relays and use it as a stand alone relay block on the firewall.
