Heater blower motor

When it's really cold outside and I start the truck, the motor won't turn on. I turned the lights on to see if they dimmed when I tried the heater and they did not. When my motor warms up and kicks out of high idle, I can turn the heater on and it functions.

I heard a moaning squealing noise from my heater motor the first time I switched it on when it was freezing cold out there. When I turned the speed up to high, it stopped the noise. On low, the motor is a bit noisy.

Is my motor going or is there an electrical component not functioning properly or both?

I was looking at my Chilton's manual. It looks like the heater blower motor is mounted into the firewall. I'm half tempted to pull the heater motor and really clean it up, then oil it to see if that helps. No heat when you get in the truck really sucks.

They are easy to replace and very cheap....... clean out the plenum while the fan is out.

I have tried to clean and oil them before and it only help for a short time. Three bolts and a plug and it is out, so just replace it. It will make you happier in the end.

If you go to the trouble of removing the fan and motor, you will save your self the time of doing it again. Been there and done that, do it right the first time and you won't be sorry. I oiled a fan motor on a 1977 f100 only because I would almost have to remove the dash. It only helped a couple of weeks and back to the squeeling which is the bearings going out.
