Hey guys, I'm looking for a ZF5 to put into my 78 F150 with the 351M and I can't seem to figure out which engine to pull one off of! At first I read that it had to be from a 86-96 with a 351 also, but later I got info that said it had to come from an 86-96 with the 460! Can anyone tell me which one I want so I don't accidentally buy the wrong one? I believe the powerstroke has a totally different housing pattern than both of those correct?
Thanks for any info!
If you are talking about doing a 2wd, you need one from before 91 as the 92 up do not have provisions for the speedo. The hole is not even machined out. You can tell where it should be, just isn't there. Yes, it has to be from a 460.
According to a post I read here a while ago, the NP205 will bolt right up to the ZF, you just have to do a little grinder work so that linkage will clear. Also, I had a local machine shop alter a non-speed ZF tailhousing to accept a speedo. It was not a big job.
Curious, was there a provision to drive the speedo gear, or did you have to add that as well? I have a 92 trans that I could use if it had the speedo drive...
That's an excellent question! In my situation, I bought the trans on Ebay. It was a pre-91 but the tailshaft housing was cracked. I bought a housing on Ebay but wasn't paying attention and ended up with a 92-up, therefore it needed machined to accept the speedo. My output shaft had a drive provision since the trans was pre-91 so I can't say for sure what you'll find on a 92-up.
On the same post that showed the NP205 bolted to the ZF, the owner welded the the original clutch fork to the ZF clutch fork to maintain the mechanical linkage. I can't say for sure how well this works as my swap won't begin until spring but I'm sure going to try it.
Looking at that, it doesn't look like he needed to cut the slave mount off... You can buy the slave and master easy enough, it is the line between them that is harder to get...
If I ever get around to it, I had thought about redoing my 77 2wd with the ZF. (I have some choices to make... I have the 77 2wd and a 78 4wd shortbed that need redone... the 77 is actually in better shape...)
Do I have a truck f-superdutyaño 1992 diesel?
Hi I have a f-SuperDuty truck with a 7.3L engine and I want international take that and put a ford motor gasoline without making many modifications to the same 5-speed gearbox front reversal (box is not q)
(I like to put the same engine as the engine ........ Venezuela international is very expensive and is not the very difirce get computer parts. was thinking about a isuzu (4 cylinder) F460 )cummins)
The bell will likely be different between them. Since we don't get to deal with the same trucks stateside that you get there, it is difficult to know what exactly is similar.
