Whining sound?

Looking for help to find this noise. First of all it it doesn't do it all the time, it goes for miles with no noise the starts randomly. It sounds like it is under the center or rear of the truck. It increases in frequency with acceleration and decreases as I slow down. It starts at about 15mph and gains frequency until about 60mph when it becomes hard to hear. It sounds like something rubbing on a fine tooth gear. The speedo works fine. I removed the VSS from the rear end and could see the spinning "gear" on the ring gear, that gives a signal to that sensor. Thinking this could be the source, I took the cover off and found everything OK. Is there another "sending ring" to a sensor on the transmission or transfer case? My u-joints feel fine but I haven't taken the driveline out yet to make sure. I've heard there is a high pressure fuel pump on the frame rail that might make a similar noise, but can't find one, 96 5.8L 4x4 ext cab long bed. I appreciate any suggestions.

when I had a whining sound it was because my cat was so backed up it was forcing the exhaust out somewhere else, my buddy said it was the smog valves? Idk but either way are you loosing a lot of power? or do you have a cat at all?

Thanks, this is a more metalic sound akin to high frequency version of a "card in the spokes" The truck runs well so I would rule out the cat. hopefully the suggestions keep coming.

I haven't tried that speed(15mph) in reverse, but that's an idea. It is a lever operated(Not electric) transfer case. Why do you ask?

well sometimes the motor can engage into gear about 99% of the way and make contact with the front drive gears in the t/case making a sound but if its lever operated it kinda takes the guess work out of it

I had same year truck s/c 8 ft bed 4x4 460 c.i. with similar problem. I swore it was driveline/rear axle related. turned out to be alternator bearing. swapped alt. and noise gone. good luck

I get a bad whining sound from inside the cab of the truck at times. Luckily, I was able to isolate the cause of it...the wife was wanting to drive! LOL

Thanks guys, all good food for thought. I didn't want to spend my day going somewhere to put it on a lift so I went ahead and put it on some good jackstands and ran it( very carefully) until the noise appeared. didn't take long to isolate it to the carrier bearing.
