question on gasket sealer?????
how long dose it really take for hi-temp rtv silicone to fully cure???? i took off my water pump today put a new gasket on it and the silicone. on the tube it says finger tighten then 1hr later turn 1/2 turn and will fully cure in 24 hrs. is this true or false. i did the 1/2 turn step at 1pm est today so should i wait till 1 tomm to tighten the rest of the way and runner. or can i do it sooner.

dangit oh well...... thanks dan , when should i tighten it to full torque specs it jus said after an hour turn 1/2 turn but not when to finish tightning. do it after the 24 or before

I'd lay the bead, let it skin for 1/2 hour or so (I'm old school), then finger tighten the bolts. I'd torque them around 2 hours or so and the do as Kwikkordead said, just walk away for a day then come back and fill up the system.

The 'set up' time depends on how 'thick' you want the layer of sealant... I deal with alot of industrial machinery, so, we want the surfaces as flat and the least amount of sealant as possible...so, therefore, we apply it moderately, tighten everything to spec and rarely have an issue. On certain (seldom) applications where the mating surfaces are not machined and you are eliminating a gasket you need to make certain to apply it generously, hand tighten- let it set for about 20-40 min. then come back and fully tighten.... doesn't take 24 hrs.. the manufacturer puts that in there to protect their product.... takes about 4 hours to completely cure. Naturally the more you put.. the longer it will take..
