The belts on my pickup just wont quit squealing. They are fine at idle and up to about 3000 rpm but after that they just scream. I have tightened them and tightened them but they still squeal. I have even used belt dressing. Going down the road once and awile you can hear them chirp a little when I am just crusing and I dont know why. I dont want to tighten them too much because I could ruin my water pump. Any ideas?
My other problem is that whenever I start my pickup it automatically wants to idle up to 1500-1600 rpm. I rev the engine to slow it down and sometimes it does, but then even if you barely touch the gas it revs right back up to 1500-1600. I have no idea what makes this happen.
Installing new belts is the proper solution. You probably got coolant or oil on the ones you have now.
A quick fix is to get a smooth file or some sand paper on a stick and with the engine running rub the inner surfaces of the belts. Maybe an emery board would work. This is dangerous as hell, so do this at your own risk and stay AWAY from the fan and pulleys.
For the high idle, try spraying the choke linkage with choke cleaner. While spraying ,block the throttle open & push the choke flap back & forth a couple of times and notice if the fast idle cam drops all the way down, out of the way from the fast idle screw, when the choke is wide open.Spraying the gum off the linkage should solve the problem. Also check the choke pull off operation, when you start the engine, the rod should retract and hold steady. Finally, make sure the choke thermostat will fully open the choke flap once the engine has warmed up.
