I have a 93 F150. The last couple of days when driving, I noticed my engine was missing every once in a while. Then, yesterday, it all of a sudden wouldn't start.

First thing i did was check the fuel rail and make sure that the fuel pump was working, and it was. Then I pulled the coil wire out of the distributor and set it on the block and tried starting it. I would only get one fire from the coil wire, then it wouldnt fire again. I would then turn the key back to off, then try to restart it again, and only one fire from the wire. Sometimes it wouldnt even fire at all.

After doing this, i figured it was the coil, so i went and replaced it, it started right up. Then the next morning, same dang thing. So then i got my engine codes, and I'm getting 31 and 32 which are

Any help would be appreciated it. Have had a few people tell me it might be the ECM.

I was having issues my my 77 not starting and after replacing everything except the distributor, come to find out the ignition module went bad, and it would start every now and again but after replacing it, no problems what so ever, after looking online i found that your truck has an ignition control unit, possibly check that?

 

Ok, well a few things to update...I took the Ignition Control Unit/Module into Auto Zone, and they tested it several times and everything passed.

Also, I'm thinking that I can probably dismiss the engine light codes I have right now. I have the vacuum lines on the EGR valve plugged off because the emission system on my truck has been removed. So I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with the coil not firing.

Im debating on replacing the Ignition Switch on the Steering Column and replacing it. Im wondering if there is a bad contact or something in there that isnt making a good connection to tell the everything to fire. It's very inconsistent, which really sucks, especially with something electronic. Does anyone have any more input on whats going on?

Yeah that could be a hard one to find, I don't put much faith in the parts store bench tests since having alternators with internal problems pass on these things. You may be onto something with your ignition switch, if you think it may be suspect then it's a good place to start.

 

so would you recommend replacing the ignition control unit/module even though it passed the test too?
