I am looking for input for the best combination of intake and carb for a 390,
it is in a 68 F500 dump truck.
only looking for torque.
don't care about mileage, anything over 5 mpg is great.
don't need top end rpm
engine is a crate motor, supposed to be "street performance"
maybe 20,000 miles on it
the truck weighs 10,000 empty and is licensed for 24,000
You are apparently not worried about original so any 2 barrell setup will work fine, but if it is setup and cammed for street performance you might be dissapointed with it in your truck.
The Edelbrock Performer is the intake of choice by most for these motors, as far as carbs go Holley vs. Edelbrock is mostly a personal preference, i run the Edelbrock 600 on my 390.
im running a edelbrock 4 barrel 600 w/ manual choke and i'm quite pleased with it. never had a holley though so i cant comment on that. theres some websites out there that you can use to calculate your optimum cfm. heres one: Calculate Required CFM Of Carburetor according to this i should only have a 500 cfm maximum case scenario. a friend of mine had a dual demon setup on his 76 stingray. it was something crazy like 1200 cfm, i cant remember, but it was way too much carb for that car. it had plenty of *****, but not as "responsive" as it shouldve been in my opinion. and he got like 8 mpg on the highway. lol. not the best analogy on a ford trucks forum but hey im not ashamed to say at one point chevy made some really phenominal cars, but their trucks suck. ford trucks reign supreme without a doubt and stomp chevy trucks. but i do love their cars.
