The number that you found is a casting number. It doesn't identify the cid of the block but indicates the year(roughly) of the engine. I say roughly because they used the same casting sometimes for a couple of years with minor upgrades when needed. Your number indicates a 1971 casting(D=70's,1=71,A=Ford fullsize car line; a T in this position would mean it was a truck engine). Since the 400 wasn't introduced until '77, and it is a car engine, if your heads look like the 351M/400 heads it may be a 351 Cleveland. If your valve covers bolt half on the head and half on the intake manifold and it has a '352' cast into the front face of the block, it's a 360/390. mike
