I am trying to use a 9" wider custom housing. I haven't heard of anyone doing this with the 8.8. I know that noone has a tone ring for the 9" but I vaguely remember one of the off road mags doing something like this years ago. I also like the 3rd bearing on the 9".
If you want to swap to something stronger, get a 10.25" full floater. They have the VSS in them if you get a new enough one. Only problems is you have to use 8 lug wheels of at least 16" diameter on it. The 8 lug wheels are not an issue if your are swapping in an 8 lug front axle, otherwise it would not be worth the hassle.
The best option is to just keep the 8.8". There is a lot of performance stuff out there to beef them up, and from what I hear, a built 8.8" will hold up pretty well. So I would recomend just doing a good performance rebuild on your 8.8".
the 10.25 is way to heavy for this application. I am doing that swap in a 93 Bronco project though because I need the VSS for the 460 fuel injection. We're also swaping in a D60 out of a 93 F-350. I want to keep the TTB in the 150 because I can get more wheel travel than I could with a SAS
