Hey fellas,
I was hoping yall could help. Im a 7.3 guy so this is my first post over here.
My dad has asked me to help him chip/tune his truck. Looking for some direction on what mods should be done first, and what tuners are best.
I understand that yall have a good intake from the factory, so I will skip that one.
He is looking to keep the noise to a minimum, and I dont think he will want to change his whole exhaust out unless it is absolutely needed. Will a Walker of Aeroturbine style muffler keep the EGT's in check? Maybe a Cat delete too?
I have heard SCT is the way to go and that flip chips are not recommended, any thoughts on this? Is jody the best tuner for the 6.0, or would you Recommend someone else?
Pyro, Boost and tranny temps will all be monitored.

Good man. Best thing you can do right there is to keep that one stock.

A good 4" turbo back exhaust would be the way to go in order to help keep EGTs in check. Don't go higher more then 4"s as that is actually counter productive. If you are worried about the noise level, delete muffler and cat seperately, see which one gives you the noise level that you like, or delete both of them at the same time if that noise isn't too bad. Order the test delete pipes for the Cat and Muffler and that'll make the swap in and out a whole lot easier.

SCT or anything that allows for custom tuning. If you go with SCT get the X3, not the LiveWire. The LiveWire is still problematic and you stand a very good chance of having one crap out on you or atleast annoying you. I use the Spartan Phalanx and like it alot, but SCT is good as well.

Good...yes, best.....depends. I think most people would suggest either Eric at Innovative if you go with SCT or Matt at Spartan if you go that route. I know Jody is tops for the 7.3 and their tunes are good for the 6.0, but there are others that have been tuning the 6.0 longer and know the quirks of this engine better(my opinion mind you).

Might want to think about adding ECT and/or EOT as well as a Fuel PSI gauge. Those are critical for a 6.0 and not having to worry about headbolt issues or starving injectors.
For ECT there is a port in the block. For EOT I actually pull that from the computer with the Phalanx, however, I think some people will use a T to get oil pressure and oil temp from the filter housing.
Thank you all for the great advice.
On the EOT and ECT what are normal and high readings?
Talk to a user with the handle bismic. He has compiled a huge spreadsheet with all this(and more) info that is good for a 6.0. That would probably be the single best place to get all the info.
Normal(for me, I run hotter then most people on these boards just because of my mods) is around 180-185 ECT and around 190-195 EOT during the winter time. Summer time I see 200-205 ECT and 215-218 EOT.
As for max figures, I would try to stay below 225 for ECT and 240 for EOT. ECT and EOT readings should be ~15 degrees apart if everything is working correctly. I do believe that there is a flash now that will trigger a CEL if those readings according to the computer sensors go beyond 15 degrees, but I don't know that for certain.
The edge insight and the dash daq will monitor everything needed except the egt's. The insight and dash daq can be used with sct tuning as digital gauges. The dash daq is part of what tex uses and is what the spartan phalanx is based around if you go that route. It is a little more involved to get the phalanx or dash daq to read egts and will probably require an adapter. The edge insight just needs a thermocouple.

Well the Insight won't monitor Fuel PSI either as that isn't in our truck's computers. I believe you can add it on the Phalanx, but it is a little more involved. I actually use a gauge mounted on my steering column, so I haven't looked into the widgets for the DashDAQ like I should/would have.
Can you see both the EOT and ECT with the dash daq, or did I miss read your post. I am considering the dash daq, but I am not sure what is involved in getting to read fuel pressure. I have DiProcol guages now and I guess they are out of buisness so I cant match them.
If I could get the guages I would just get them I think it would be cheaper.

Yes, you can use it for both. At one time I did get both in order to see what the digital read v. the analog, but I just pull EOT off the DashDAQ exclusively now. It does do both though.

I don't know much about the widgets that you have to use to get EGT and Fuel PSI. There are a couple of users that have done them, but I have not.
I already have the EGT probe that I use with my DiProcol Guages so I wouldnt need that anyway. At this point I am just worried about fuel pressure and would like to see EOT and ECT.
I am not sure what anyone is using but I was on Diesel Manors site and it doesnt look like there are any electric FP guages anymore. Saya I have to buy an isolator. The Diprocol were nice cause they were all inclusive for a decent price. I'm gonna have over 200 bucks in just a FP guage now... guess I am an idiot for waiting.
