2x4 - 4x4?

I have a 2wd 73 f-250 super camper special w/ a 390 and a c-6 trans, and i want to convert it to
4 wheel rather than sell the thing and buy another. I don't even know where to begin or if it is even worthwhile to do so but any info would be appreciated, i really don't want to get rid of this truck.

Justin, Seems that you may be spending more than you want to. I have never done that type of change out. But having said that i would still look around for a `Doner Truck` complete. park it somewhere and remove what you want as you want.
seems that having a Reference vehicle would be a great help from start to finish. You know , find one with a trash body but everything on the bottom side is in fair rebuildable shape.

I do know how it is when you try to finish something and need just that small spacer or something to make it all work!!
Good luck with your project!

Justin keep the truck, buy a 4X4 that will fit your needs.

Trying to make a 4X4 from a 2X4 would be the hardest conversion of all. So many things are different on the 4wd. The engine and body are about all that could be used, and some modifications there.

I've never done it either, but I've looked at it and played with the idea myself as I'm sure we all have. The front frame is different as is steering linkage, spring mounts, crossmembers, etc. For me to do it I figure I'd have to lift my '72 about 12" on the suspension just to get the front pumpkin to clear the crossmember under the oil pan. That doesn't even take into consideration the fact the truck is gonna be down for quite awhile in order to do it. I'd have to buy another truck to drive while converting the one I have now. For me it would be easier and more cost effective to just buy a 4wd.

The main problem that you are going to have is that the frames are completely different. Even today, the 4X4 uses front leaf springs unlike your truck which have the front coils. Your best best would be to find a solid 4x4 and work on it. You could switch the cab and bed off yours and put it on the 4x4 frame, but thats a whole lot of time, and money.
But don't let anyone discourage you, if you really want to go for it, Good Luck.

If you find a complete 4x4 which has a decent frame and drivetrain you can do this swap for next to no money! That's right. Between the two trucks you should be able to build a very nice 4wd. Why re-invent the wheel? On the other hand...if your time is worthless and you don't mind having a hacked frame to nothing about the safety issues then by all means, go for it.
