I got the new bellowed up-pipes from Clay, and today while trying to put the bolts into the y-collector, I snapped one before it even seated! I was using an impact wrench, and the damn things wouldn't seat. I got one out ok, but the bottom 1/4" of threads were trashed. Funny thing is, is that I measured it with a depth micrometer and I have enough room to install them, but they seem to bottom out. I'm thinking that maybe I need to cut them shorter maybe? And the damn things are metric, so I can't even use my standard taps, so the broken bolt is getting drilled and tapped for a 3/8x18. Can anyone advise me on what the hell I'm doing wrong here??
i would use one of the old bolts with lots of antisize compound, and tru to screw them in.
if you want i have all the tapps if you need one just let me know what size. but i doubt you want to wait for it. get OEM bolts , they are cheap. and get the tap to clean out the threads.
hope my 0.02c helps......
The bolts have a flat spot in them so they start biting after a couple turns in. If you don't get them perfect this can happen. You shouldn't need an impact to seat them. It is possible that there was something down in there from being ceramic coated as well. Princess used an impact at RRE and the same thing happened. He had to drill and tap one side as well.
UPDATE- I used some lube on the bolts, and guess what- they went in JUST FINE. I am a DUMBAZZ..... PHEW, I managed to just drive the damn broken piece of tap further into the hole, so at least now I have about 3/8" I can work with the re-tap for a bigger bolt. CLay- I love pipes, and recommend them to anyone sitting on the fence about getting them. I'm just not a big fan of lubing bolts, especially ones that need torque, but that didn't work this time. Oh well, problem solved. Once again thanks for the encouragement guys!
